DEAD TALK

About The Event
Event Organiser - CAJETAN BOY
DEAD TALK - DEADTALK – SYNOPSIS – 2018 UKUMBI MDOGO- 16TH TO 18TH FEBRUARY 2018 The whispered conversations of ghosts in a city morgue are not just a result of Paco’s fertile imagination nor Noah’s drunken stupor. ‘Deadtalk’ is carefully crafted drama that seeks to address one of our greatest fears; Two morgue attendants, Noah and Paco analyze the meanings of life and death, from the perspective of the living as they attend to the bodies of Miles, Baraka, Nayla and Lucilla who are just waiting to be ‘planted six feet under’. What would you be willing to sacrifice in order to get a second chance at life? Whereas Lucilla would prefer to remain dead, Nayla regrets having attended a party and getting drugged while Miles had time to prepare himself right down to what will run next to his obituary. Baraka however, though shot twelve times, has a bone to pick with his maker while making no apologies for what he did. In this play, Cajetan humorously delves into the after-world and explores the thoughts, feelings and questions we would probably have if we were to literally speak from the grave. Have you ever wondered what happens after you die? How long does it take to die? Take a trip through this ‘waiting room for the dead’ and find out in this humorous story of the living and walking dead and the dead-living. The cast are, Benson Ochungo Obiero, Vitalis Wesh, Ywaya Javier, Shelly Gitonga, Susan Kavathe and magnetic new talent Maurice Muthiani The play is directed by Caroline Odongo (who last directed the epic ‘Edufa’) and Produced by Aroji Drama Academy Don't miss this eerie yet funny play that will give you an opportunity to laugh at death and its victims, at the Kenya National Theater (Ukumbi Mdogo) from 16th to 18th February 2018.

KENYA'S WARS OF INDEPENDENCE

About The Event
Event Organiser - Shiraz Durrani
KENYA'S WARS OF INDEPENDENCE - Kenyan neo-colonial regime. In celebrating the achievements of the two heroes, Vita Books together with PALIAct[1], MMRC[2], the Azimio Collective, MSCJ[3], Awaaz and Alkebulan School of Black Studies are pleased to invite you to the launch of the book, Kenya’s War of Independence - Mau Mau and its Legacy of Resistance to Colonialism and Imperialism, 1948-1990 by Shiraz Durrani. At the same time, we are inaugurating the innovative PALIAct Liberation Library which aims to fill gap in information provision by providing alternative information of relevance to working people. Kenya’s War of Independence is an expanded and revised version of the author’s 1986 booklet, Kimaathi, Mau Mau’s First Prime Minister of Kenya. It covers Mau Mau’s resistance to colonialism and neo-colonialism and reflects on its ideology, organisation and achievements. The author sees Mau Mau in the larger context of Kenya’s war of independence and looks at the influence of organised, radical trade unions as the engine of resistance, linking economic with political demands of working people. New sections then examine post-independence resistance by the underground December Twelve Movement-Mwakenya. The PALIAct Liberation Library was revived in in Nairobi in 2017. It aims to make available progressive material and to encourage reading, study and research by working people in Kenya. It has an initial collection of almost a thousand titles of progressive material, mostly books but also pamphlets, videos and photographs. It incorporates December Twelve Movement’s underground library set up by Nazmi Durrani in the 1980s. A majority of these are classics which are either out of print or cannot be found in the local libraries and bookshops. The Liberation Library incorporates the Community ReachOut Project which breaks the colonial library mould and takes the library to various communities to enhance personal and national development. The launch and the inauguration will held on Wednesday, 21st February 2018 from 5.30pm to 7.30 p.m. at the Kenya National Theatre – Ukumbi Mdogo. The launch will be preceded by an exhibition of books, publications, photographs, films, liberation music, among other progressive materials on Mau Mau from 2.00 p.m. – 5.00 p.m. at the same venue. The Chief Guest will be Hon. Dr. Willy Mutunga, the 14th Chief Justice of Post-Independence Kenya & the First President of the Supreme Court of Kenya. Your attendance will be highly appreciated. Copies of the Book will be available for purchase at the event – or from the following bookshops Prestige Bookshop (Prudential Building, Mama Ngina Street) and Bookstop (Yaya Centre) in Kenya or from African Books Collective worldwide at www.africanbookscollective.com

MINISTER KARIBU - MINISTER, KARIBU! A Synopsis MINISTER, KARIBU! by John Sibi-Okumu, is a rollicking, satirical comedy based on mistaken identity. Chief, a gangster by trade, is a dead-ringer, in looks, for a very prominent government official. He and his merry men use this physical similarity to take advantage of the Big Man syndrome which pervades Kenya. Their latest opportunity is a party conference to be held at Walevis’ Authentic African Hotel or WAAH, run by the redoubtable Mama Toto, where various delegates have much to gain from ingratiating themselves with ‘Bwana Mkubwa,’ real or imagined. Meanwhile, the eyes of the outside world are also fixed on Kenya at this politically fraught time. Come and see us as we see ourselves and as others see us! And be prepared to have a good laugh, into the bargain.

27th EUROPEAN FILM FESTIVAL
About The Event
Event Organiser - European Film Festival 2018
27th EUROPEAN FILM FESTIVAL - This year we're looking to broaden the festival beyond the film screenings themselves. The festival's curator Nyambura M. Waruingi is doing this by programming the films in conversation with each other, together with related side-events. For example, on Europe Day (9 May) the Goethe Institute will screen "Losers & Winners", "Europe At Sea", and "The Wait". These films examine different aspects of migration in Europe, and there'll also be a panel discussion about the theme. The festival programme also includes events aimed at participants in Kenya's film industry. These include workshops with the Script-Writers' Guild and master-classes on various challenges facing the industry. Running for most of the month of May, this year's festival will screen some fifty films originating from twenty European countries as well as from Kenya. Dialogue will be in the original languages of the films, with English subtitles for the non-English-language films. Almost all of the festival will be open to the general public. The main exceptions will be the opening and closing nights, on Friday 4 May and Saturday 26 May. For public screenings, entry will be completely free of charge. The festival is organised jointly by the Embassies of the participant European countries and the EU Delegation to Kenya. The festival has benefited hugely from the support of stakeholders from across Kenya's film industry, including both the official national authorities (the Kenya Film Classification Board and the Kenya Film Commission) and leading film-makers. We're also grateful to Buehler Limited for sponsoring the festival. In addition the venues for the festival are not only locations for screenings: they're also partners in it, and are helping to promote the festival as well as making their spaces available for the festival at reduced cost or completely free of charge. Most of the films to be screened have been kindly made available by the Embassies of the participant European countries, who are also providing financial support to the festival. Kindly note that more information will be added over the coming weeks and that a few details may change, so if you're planning to go to the festival then please come back to this page to check for more Friday 25 May - National Theatre 10:00 Workshops 15:00 Short & Sweet: He and She (2010, 88mins, Germany) 17:00 Wazi FM (Vincezno Cavallo, 62mins, Italy/Kenya), followed by Q&A with director, producers and actors 19:00 Una Pistola en Cada Mano (Cesc gay, 2012, 95mins, Spain) Saturday 26 May - National Theatre 14:00 Sanctuary (Len Collin, 2017, 97mins, Ireland) Closing ceremony - Private Event Sunday 27 May - National Theatre 10:00 Workshops 14:00 Iqbal Farooq (T. ROMEO AND JULIET

About The Event
Event Organiser - THEATRE LABORATORY - ALMA ALTER
ROMEO AND JULIET - The National Theatre in Nairobi and Theatre-laboratory ¨Alma Alter¨ present the musical-dance performance ¨Romeo and Juliet¨ by William Shakespeare. „Romeo and Juliet or a Sonnet for the Eternal Love” is one of the performances of The International Theatre Program “Shakespeare - Contemporary and Cruel”. The program includes the productions “Richard, Richard Who”, “Time for Lear”, Hamlet or Three Boys and One Girl”, “I, Lady Macbeth”, and “Hamlet versus Don Quixote”. All of them are based on the original music of Konstantin Kutshev, which was composed especially for this project, and the unique choreography of Petya Yosifova. How to say “I love you” with no words? - We asked ourselves. We have found the answer in the music that says more than words can ever say. In 1999 at the International Festival for Experimental Theatre in Cairo, we got an award for inventing a “New Theatre Language” - the language of love which we - the human beings, speak from the bottom of our souls. “Dance first. Think later. It’s a natural order”, said Samuel Beckett. “Sing first. Dance later”, we added. We started from here: The melody appeared - the body reacted. The word appeared - the thought reacted. One eternal pure love story makes the people come in the theatre to experience it again and again, but this time in an unusual way. Some of them sing the songs by heart. My “yes”. My “no”. My “maybe”. You are the quietest of my tears. The performance is supported by Student council of Sofia university and Cultural routes fondation.

THIEVES AS HUMANA

About The Event
Event Organiser - ESTHER KAMBA
THIEVES AS HUMANA - This year we have consistently presented a Kenyan play each month, through our, 'A Kenyan A Month program'. Thank you for attending! This time on the 31st of June and 1st of July 2018, we present to you Dr. Fred Mbogo's, Thieves As Humans. This project is special to us, firstly because it is ADA's first piece to be directed, produced, stage managed, set-designed and house-managed by women! Secondly it is our first two-hander (so the men also get their share since the 2 characters are male). Come share this unique experience with us at the Cheche Gallery inside the Kenya Cultural Centre. SYNOPSIS: What is it to be betrayed?what is it to have your past haunt you then catch up with you? Three men bound by mounds of garbage and thiefery as their source of income,a dumpsite as a home to the 3 of them and a bond stronger than friendship managed to get by with the difficulties life has to offer. When one of them decides to go against the other two, he tries to move on with life but his betrayal catches up with him years later . Will he be able to reconcile with his past or will his past let him pay for the mistake he did? This is an edge of the seat; nail biting, and gripping two-hander by Fred Mbogo about dealing with your past and self-acceptance. It is directed by Esther Kamba , Starring Bilal Mwaura &Xavier Ywaya and Produced by Wanjira Hassan

A Midsummer Night's Dream

About The Event
Event Organiser - Dance Centre Kenya
A Midsummer Night's Dream - Dance Centre Kenya (DCK) is pleased to announce our first ever full-length production of William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. This Shakespearean classic will provide the 65 members of Dance Centre Kenya’s elite Ballet Company the opportunity to showcase their talent, while giving young and old audience members alike an opportunity to witness a spectacular event and be whisked away to the land of magic and fairytale. The proceeds from these performances will go to the DCK Sponsorship Programme. For one hour before both Sunday matinee performances Titania herself will be holding a Rose Petal Party where all of the young audience members will have the opportunity to do a backstage tour and see the beautiful sets, costumes, and dancers as they prepare for the performance, as well as have their picture taken with some of the cast members. They will be given a cupcake and have the opportunity to get the autographs of the stars of the ballet. Since its inception in 2015, a cornerstone of Dance Centre Kenya’s mission to spread dance throughout East Africa is to include those who come from an underprivileged background. In this cast more than 15% of the performers come from humble means, but the audience would never know, as we are a united team of dancers. With two new backdrops from renowned visual artist Naomi Wambui Mwai and all new costumes and sets created by the team at Dance Centre Kenya and Palacina Interiors, the sheer magic of theatre will come to life through the elegant medium of ballet this March. There will be three performances as follows: Opening Night Gala - 30th March 2019 Cocktail - 6.00 pm Performance - 7:00 pm The Kenya National Theatre Tickets: Kes. 2,500 Adults, Kes. 2,000 Children Matinees - 31st March 2019 at 1:00 pm and 4:30 pm The Kenya National Theatre Tickets: Kes. 2,000 Adults, Kes. 1,500 Children For more information and to book your tickets, please contact the Hardy Studio location on 0705 725369 or Rosslyn Studio location on 0713 930149

THE BAR-AZA - Synopsis...* 😊 It is said in the modern world, men take their problems to three entities; God, doctors and most of all; the bartender. Let’s stick with the bartender, the bar-aza is story that revolves around a bartender whose life is spent giving advice to his drunken customers, they trust him, they confide in him and they long for the day to end just for them to share all their sorrows with him; drown their sorrows so to say, oh they also love the fact that he doesn’t talk a lot. To say the story is met by twists and turns is an understatement. What they don’t know is that he has his own problems... 🙄🙄. #play #Baraza #comical #hilariousmemes #theater #kenya #untold #stories

THE LAST ADAM

About The Event
Event Organiser - Liquid Arts Entertainment
THE LAST ADAM - Synopsis Morality impacts our everyday decisions, and those choices are directed by our conscience. Again, we must decide for ourselves where the consequences originates. Many people hold to the idea that the conscience is a matter of our hearts, that concepts of right, wrong, and fairness are "programmed" in each of us. "The last Adam" is a story about a king who not only lacked the moral value but also believed that his core mandate is to change the cause of history, by killing every male child, saying *"... Adam (man) was created to die...no one except me should rule...I will kill every last Adam.."* and so it was done..! There was only one who was on the run,one last Adam... He gave the order and the search begin, blood was shed...no one would cry fawl in this type of immoral atrocity. If the Child survives the king losses if the child survive every last Adam is safe. What will happen to the King? Will the Last Adam survive ?
